Quite a boring trip from Dunedin, very flat and lots of sheep.
Te Anau is a little town with a very big lake, float plane
trips are possible but not many.
Gwen went to local supermarket to get tomorrows lunch since
there are no cafes, nor permanent residents in Milford, only access is by road,
ship from the Tasman Sea or by air.
All supplies go down the solitary road - State
Highway 84, which we found at dinner was at that time closed due to a landslip
caused by heavy rain 2 days earlier at the same spot of a massive slip a few
months earlier which closed the road for several weeks.
Next morning we drove down the road anyway despite already
knowing that it was still closed with only empty buses to rescue those trapped
and a lorryload of supplies being allowed. The road remained closed until
afternoon 2 days later.
We got some decent pictures but much the same as we already
had, apart for pictures of wild lupins which are on all uncultivated land on
the South Island and have been classified as a pernicious weed.
Back in Te Anau we were given a lake cruise and a possible
trip down a cave to see Glow worms, Gwen had already done this on the way down
to Rotorua so we stayed in the café and got bitten by sand flies instead.
