We drove a long way south past a major Hydroelectric Power
Station at Benmore.
Next lunch at Oamaru famous for it’s white Limestone
buildings and a caricature preserved Steam Locomotive – Steampunkt, which for
$2 would belch fire or steam.
By the road we saw the Moeraki Boulders, perfectly natural
half spheres.
On our normal trip
round as we arrived we were shown the world’s steepest street – Baldwin Street,
Gwen’s maiden name
Gwen went on a Nature trip to see both penguin and albatross
breeding grounds, it was an expensive disappointment, 3 penguins hiding and a possible
distant albatross, lots of gulls (of course) and cormorants.
I went on the Taieri Gorge Railway but got a seat on the
right of the carriage, when all the scenery was on the left (we were meant to
swap over at the top, half way up we had a toilet break, and I took a picture
of a sculpture of a sheep dog, and then my battery packed up with no warning,
always shows as fully charged.
Dunedin is very much a Scottish City, with streets named
after Scottish places, we learned that Dunedin is Edinburgh in Gaelic.
The hotel was equally bad as the Travelodge in Wellington,
we had to lay our own tables for breakfast and then queue for the buffet only
to find they had run out of many items and had to tell the staff about it.
Next morning we had a couple of hours to ourselves and went
to the library for free wifi, and then pictures of Rabbie Burns Statue and the
Railway Station, which is regarded as amongst the best architecture in New Zealand.
